Candle making with West Coast Botanicals
Candle maker, sea swimmer, slow living advocate working with only pure essential oils and plant wax to create natural, cruelty free candles. Based on the West coast of Wales and raising two young girls in a life inspired by nature and the simple pleasures of slow living.
Seagulls calling overhead, I wander down the garden path to the workshop. As I open the door morning shadows dance on the walls, the sun filtering through the swaying bamboo plant. My first point of call is always to rest my hands on the workbench and look out over the fields that surround our home. Today I’ll be making a batch of Lemongrass & Lavender candles.
I work quietly, filling the pots with water and click the thermostat on. Next I fill jugs of creamy plant wax which I will stir slowly until it’s a warm golden liquid. It’s a process not to be rushed so I let my mind wander back to my morning swim, the roaring of the sea, frothing waves and the revitalized energy that I hold with me. The contrast is what I love the most, from the wild and powerful elements to the calm, methodical process of candle making.
The wax a golden elixir, it’s time to wick the jars and weigh the oils. Lemongrass essential oil has a wonderfully light, citrus scent and is helpful in alleviating feelings of exhaustion and anxiety. I blend this with calming, soothing lavender essential oil to create a scent that is clean, herbaceous and sunny.
My senses are filled with this uplifting scent and when the wax is at the right temperature the ingredients are brought together. Stirring, I watch the wax and oils combine before pouring the botanical infusion into jars.
The candles are set aside to cure for two weeks before sending them out and sharing this moment of calm in which they were created.
